Al Capone Gangster Essay Sample

Al Capone Gangster Essay Sample Al Capone Gangster Analysis Essay Example Al Capone Gangster Analysis Essay Example There are numerous popular hoodlums in the history. They become notable gratitude to their notorious wrongdoings. In some cases, their prevalence develops so much that they become a type of amazing lawbreakers, and shockingly, a few people even romanticize these hoodlums considering them of sentimental renegades who needed to break the framework. By and by, things are considerably more trite, on the grounds that there is regular basic clarification for people groups wrongdoings. They perpetrate these violations out of want to get individual additions or social foundation. A case of Al Capone, Chicago notorious criminal, can demonstrate these speculations. Violations Al Capone was conceived in 1899 in New York to Italian foreigners (FBI, n.d.). His family was not rich, yet youngsters were dealt with well and had a typical youth. Capone had numerous siblings and sisters, and some of them got engaged with his pack business. His family lived in a network which comprised of Italians generally, and kids didn't associate with different nationalities much. Not long after Als birth, the family moved to another loft in an alternate zone. There was a blend of individuals from various foundations, and Capone youngsters could impart not just with Italians. Al Capone went to American school which was not reasonable for showing offspring of the Italian foundation. The educators were exacting and preferential toward offspring of Italian outsiders, and the understudies were frequently presented to beatings by individual understudies. The school might be one of the makes that drove Capones future as criminal. There, in spite of the fact that he was a really decent understudy, he would regularly lose his temper. Once, an educator blew up with him and beat him. Al Capone lost his temper and beat her back. He was ousted when he was just fourteen, and he stayed away forever to class once more. Such hostility in school clarifies a great deal about Capones advancement as a young person and impacts which drove him to his criminal life. In the wake of being removed from schoo,l Al Capone started speaking with individuals associated with groups. There was a solid pack in Chicago in that time. Johnny Torrio was its pioneer. Torrio composed mobsters into a gathering of hoodlums who were acting as per his arranging. He framed a posse which had a decent structure and was efficient. On account of Torrio, Capone found out about nuts and bolts of wrongdoing business. By the by, he was as yet not a criminal himself. His family was doing fine and dandy; he was living with his folks and had no expectation to leave at that point. One can say that regardless of numerous difficulties, Capone had the option to abstain from being hauled into the criminal life. By and by, the year he turned eighteen, he became one bit nearer to his eventual fate of a criminal head. He turned into a barkeep in a cafã © of Frankie Yale, another city hoodlum who knew Torrio well. Once, during work, Capone saw a young lady he preferred. He praised her, however her sibling accepting the commendation as the offense. He cut his face barely any occasions; as a resul, Al Capone was left with a few scars all over which stayed for an incredible duration. From that point forward, he was rebuffed by Yale. That occurrence trained Capone to control his temper and some important abilities required for a posse head. He understood the pitilessness of packs and their pioneers and the need to have a virus mind while settling on brutal choices. Yales nearness drove Capone to carrying out little wrongdoings and hauling further into the criminal world. It was during when nineteen-year-old Capone experienced passionate feelings for and wedded an Irish young lady who was pregnant with his first kid, Sonny. With his family, Capone attempted to stop his criminal experience and found a fair line of work. His dads demise changed the circumstance. After his dad kicked the bucket, Capone, who not, at this point had a caring figure, chose to grasp into the criminal world completely. At that point he reached Torrio once again: It was 1921 and Capone had betrayed decency everlastingly (Bardsley, n.d.). Torrio proposed Al Capone to move to Chicago where Al joined his group. He was Torrios right hand until Torrio was gravely harmed and resigned from criminal. At that point, Al turned into a pioneer of the posse. He immediately picked up control in Chicago working with numerous criminals and sorting out them, so they remembered him as thei r pioneer. His business was associated with unlawful liquor selling during Prohibition time, prostitution, sorted out assaults, pay off, and charge intrigues. Amusingly, many didn't consider Capone of a lawbreaker, but instead as of Robin Hood on account of his investment in numerous causes. In 1929, there was a Saint Valentines Day Massacre with criminals being shot by rivals faithful to Capone, and Capone was viewed as the principle coordinator behind it (in spite of the fact that it was rarely demonstrated). In thirties, Capone was sent to prison for not many occasions for certain wrongdoings; he went through very nearly five years in Alcatraz where he despite everything figured out how to control his pack domain from behind the bars (Cave, 2010). All things considered, in jail, Capones wellbeing declined. After he was discharged, he could no longer lead a posse (Capone, 2012). He resigned and had a quiet existence until his passing at 48 years old. His PCP said that presently be fore death, Capones awareness was, for example, of a twelve-year-old kid. There are sure methodologies while breaking down and deciphering Capones wrongdoings. Initial, one may attempt to clarify his wrongdoings and brutality with mental speculations. For instance, a factor which prompted rough wrongdoings later on might be the viciousness Capone experienced in school. He couldn't retaliate, particularly with instructors annoying and slapping him; the main time he attempted to guard himself, he was removed. Subsequently, the powerlessness to safeguard himself and screwy feeling of equity prompted his craving for retribution. Psychoanalytic hypothesis clarifies Capones conduct as a response to inappropriate socialization during his adolescence. The equivalent can be seen with Capones involvement with Yales cafã ©. After he was beaten and gotten his scars, they were consistently there to help him to remember his disgrace. His nearby collaboration and correspondence with criminals (in spite of the fact that not immediate interest) prompted his thoughts regarding equity being mutilated. Intellectual improvement hypothesis clarifies Capones violations as the consequence of wrong thoughts on profound quality and society. Capone accepted that power was the primary determinant of equity and that he could modify law to his demonstrations, not the other way around. That was the reason he viewed his violations as something ordinary and didn't discover anything incorrectly about submitting them. One can see that the variables which affected Capones conduct can be effortlessly applied to mental hypotheses which clarify why he acted the manner in which he did. One can likewise utilize learning hypothesis to clarify Capones conduct and violations. His correspondence with criminals gave him that they didn't get rebuffed for their violations on account of the capacity to pay off the required individuals and having substitutes for their activities. Thus, they were fruitful in their own particular manner without being answerable for the demonstrations they did. Capone discovered that with shrewd methodology, he could be much the same as that. Another factor which prompted criminal occupation was the passing of Capones father. The dad was a figure Capone took a gander at proudly and profound respect as an individual who could lead such a major family. By and by, Capone was clearly disillusioned with the situation in his family, since they were not rich enough, and he had another family all alone. Along these lines, the demise of a fair dad who functioned admirably and could pass judgment on his child for criminal conduct let Capone pick a criminal way since there was nobody who might contradict such a choice. Capone understood that he was the one driving the family now, and as a pioneer, he was settling on choices nobody could repudiate. Network in which Capone grew up likewise contributed extraordinarily to his wrongdoing life. For instance, it was anything but an exceptionally rich neighborhood where little youngsters from foreigners families were making some hard memories finding what they needed to do throughout everyday life. They didn't have numerous open doors because of powerlessness to get decent training. They could either follow their dads steps or pick an existence of crooks. Numerous youngsters were baffled with constrained decisions they had, and they joined groups. They saw packs as an approach to free themselves. Youthful Capone likewise realized that legitimate life would not get him flourishing his locale. This factor might be clarified by sociological strain hypothesis. It centers around the holes Capone had while arranging something and openings he got on account of wrongdoing. Along these lines, one can see that there were numerous variables which drove Capone to his criminal experience. There were additionally different elements which were pushing him on his way as a criminal legend. As a matter of first importance, Capone understood that so as to look after control, he must be rough. Subsequently, rough violations were the need to keep his status and cause different criminals to tail him just as caution contention packs. He saw criminal life as a business which had certain guidelines that must be followed. Al Capone understood that so as to be a pioneer, he needed to make others dread and regard him, and he utilized the viciousness as a device for that. The capacity to control his feelings helped him significantly, on the grounds that he saw composed violations and brutality as the important business steps. Another factor to carry out wrongdoings was the advantages the violations gave Capone. He turned into a rich man who had an enormous impact. He was an open figure and could do nearly all that he needed. Henceforth, because of wrongdoings, Capone was driving an existence he had always wanted where he was a rich head having an extraordinary (according to one perspective) life. One can apply sociological hypotheses to clarify these elements. Reasonable decision hypothesis shows that Capone carried out his violations so as to get narrow minded additions. These additions could be cash, yet in addition status and regard. For instance, Saint Valentines Day Massacre demonstrated that Capote urgently needed other group

Painting Vincent Van Gogh, Bedroom in Arles Essay

Van Gogh and The Representation of Happiness Through His Own Bedroom Vincent Van Gogh, Bedroom in Arles, 1889, Oil on canvas, currently at the De Young Museum (San Francisco), â€Å"Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cà ©zanne and Beyond: Post-Impressionist Masterpieces from the Musà ©e d’Orsay†Exhibition. On a smaller canvas than two other similar paintings, Vincent Van Gogh carefully painted for the third time his bedroom in Arles, a charming town in the south of France, and thus created this approximately 22  ½ x 29’’ artwork. In fact, Van Gogh made three almost identical paintings on the theme of his bedroom and are named  « Bedroom in Arles  ». The first one, kept at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is painted in October 1888. About a year after, Van†¦show more content†¦Perhaps he had come to Arles for the sun and for him, it was an immense joy to live in such bright bedroom, bursting with colors. What is also fascinating about this piece of art is how the painter highlights the simplicity of his bedroom through the medium of color:  « the pale lilac walls, the floor of an old brown, the chairs and bed chrome yellow, the blood red cover, the orange little table and the blue basin†, as the painter describes it. Van Gogh asserted that he wante d to express a complete rest by handling all these different shades2. The color black, which could be evocating a certain form of anguish, is almost nonexistent in this painting. Only the frame of the mirror and windows is black. We wonder if this could mean that Van Gogh was afraid of his future and afraid to face up to reality. This is a possibility. In fact, despite the evidence of his happiness, present in this painting, Van Gogh was not married2 and many clues here let us think that he wished to be. Although the bedroom is very sparsely furnished and only contains essential items (which shows, in addition to the choice of colors, a great simplicity), we notice that many of these objects go together in pairs (two pillows, two chairs, two portraits on the wall, two drawings, and even two doors). Thus, this painting on canvas was perhaps his way of expressing his wish to meet someone and that his bedroom was arranged so as to welcome her. My dream company free essay sample

Lots of people find it hard to answer the question what do you want to do for a living. In addition, many dream that one day their hobby would constitute a big part of their occupation. I have always been good at languages and for me it is a pleasure to study one, not an obligation. But I believe that languages need to be practiced otherwise one will forget them. That is why I would like to work in a company where I need to speak many languages or at least one foreign. Also, I like different cultures and I think that working in a multinational company that has branches all over the world would be the most suitable place for me. Also, I consider myself a creative person, who likes dynamic and fast paced environment. That is the reason why being in the field of Marketing has always been my dream. We will write a custom essay sample on My dream company or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Working in such field seems very easy, but in fact Marketing and PR, not to mention planning, are activities that are very demanding – working on a tight deadline, being prepared for the unexpected things, being extremely concentrated, paying attention to every single detail and working fast, are just some of the things that a marketing person should be able to do. Most of my life I have lived in a country where economy was equivalent to crisis. I have had the opportunity to witness what is the situation with small business and what problems they face. In the recent years, especially after the economic crisis in 2007-2008, small companies have been striving to survive and remain on the market. Many people lost their jobs because consumption and thus businesses froze. That is why I want to work for a relatively large company that has developed in many markets and people have trust in it. I think that large corporations have many advantages and can give a wide variety of opportunities to every individual. Being even a small part of something that is internationally recognized is very inspirational for me. Big companies can be a source of new relationships and improve networking in general, which I consider very important. Another valuable aspect of my dream company is the individual development. As I already mentioned I like dynamics and fast paced environment. What I mean is that the corporation should give opportunities to every employee to learn more, for example, through additional trainings in a training centers or corporate universitie. I believe that learning and self-upgrading should be highly encouraged, meaning that horizontal development could be a part of the company culture. Vertical development has a high value as well. Getting a promotion is regarded as a recognizing one’s effort and contribution to the company. I would like to be an employee in a corporation where vertical development is encouraged and the process of leveling up is very fast and dynamic. I have always imagined that I work in a place where employers appreciate the efforts of the people under them and constantly motivate them. Companies can be really successful if its employees are happy and committed to what they do. I believe that every worker should be inspired and motivated, and to believe in the things the company stands for. The labor and effort should be highly valued and appreciated. People should be motivated to learn new things and grow professionally. The climate in the company should be friendly. Internal competition can be good in terms of personal motivation, but I think that it should be avoided as much as possible, since it can become a source of gossips, envy, etc. In my views the more appropriate way of working is the teamwork. I think employees should help each other and work together, thus achieving better results and keeping better working environment. Relationships outside the office are something acceptable as long as they are not manifested at work. After all, professionalism is important. In terms of relationships between managers and subordinates, I think they should be formal. Employees should be aware of their place in the company and their duties. The supervisor or manager is the one who assigns tasks, delegates responsibilities, etc. However, proposals and ideas could be highly acceptable. Big companies tend to have a certain number of shareholders. In my opinion shareholders should be the people who make the general and big decisions such as whether to sell the company, merge it with another one or sell more shares on the stock market. It is not a secret that many owners are concerned mainly with the bottom line or the companies’ profits and how all of this would affect their dividends. I believe that owners could pay attention to the image of the company as well and be more devoted to the ideas that drive this business. It can be regarded as a disadvantage of large corporations that the organizational structure is very complex and usually involves thousands of people. In that case many employees do not have any direct contact with the owners of that company. That is why I think owners should set a mission or main idea that would be a role model for behavior. Also, I believe that visits to every branch should be encouraged – thus owners would be informed how the business in the company is done and what problems occur. That is not something mandatory since shareholders have many things to think about, but in my opinion such visits would be a good practice. Today the world faces international issues such as air pollution, poverty and health deterioration. In this regard, I think companies in 21st century, in their role of global players, should be socially responsible. Charitable programs, for instance, can have double benefits – for the poor people whom the program is aimed at, and the company itself. Companies can build good image by corporate social responsibility and thus gain the trust of their customers. In my opinion, my dream company should be environmentally friendly – the production process should not cause pollution, the packages for the products should be recycled and the usage of renewable energy can be encouraged. Company employees can learn a lot from the place where they work. Inspiring and motivating people to lead a way of life that is environmentally friendly can be transferred from the office to the home, thus making the company a wonderful role model for every individual. This is the reason why I believe that corporations need to be socially and environmentally responsible – they can promote a better way of living.

Summary and response Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Summary and response - Research Paper Example In deciding on a child’s future, Newman illustrates that parents acknowledge a picture of a university life that contrasts the one depicted by him. They recognize the margin between Newman’s ideal and the imperfect realities. Instead, they endorse that the margin does not represent a decline. Currently, modern universities enjoy resources that are higher than those enjoyed by Newman’s university are. For instance, they have good lecture halls, concert halls, booking lending facilities, and places of recreation hence influencing parent’s choice. A middle class father invests a lot of money in meeting the tuition fees of 40, 000 dollars and lodging costs for his daughter. However, after four years the daughter emerges with a degree in Women’s Studies. Therefore, it results in a significant waste of a third of a million dollars. It portrays that daughter has ended the university with the same ignorance she had at the start. Currently, many students graduate in soft subjects, which require ideological conformity rather than intellectual growth. Newman explains that most students spend their leisure hours in ways that their parents would not approve. They defend it as the natural result of academic freedom. Newman shows that individuals have the scope, freedom, and habit of association, which enable them to achieve their goals regardless of the established institutions. It is evident in the homeschooling that allow students to work from home. Therefore, it will prevent the heavy expenses incurred by most parents in the education of the children. The author, Roger Scruton, has proficiently written the text that has enhanced my personal understanding of the idea with utmost ease. Scruton provides the background information of who Newman is. For instance, he portrays Cardinal John Henry Newman as a scholar,

Coca Cola Crisis Case in 1999 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Coca Cola Crisis Case in 1999 - Essay Example Despite the success and growth of Coca Cola, there have been different problems that have arisen over time. One of the problems that occurred was in 1999, when products sold in Europe, specifically in Belgium, led to several children getting sick as a result from drinking Coca Cola products. This paper will examine the basic background of the crisis, what went wrong with Coca Cola and how the company had to recover from the position. Specifically, there will be an analysis of the social and economic implications of the time which changed the attitudes toward the Coca Cola beverages and which led to the crisis. There will also be an evaluation of the several theories that caused the reaction from society. The paper will then recommend ways in which Coca Cola could have prevented this crisis from occurring and other actions that could have been taken to change immediate responses to avoid similar difficulties in the future. The 1999 Coca Cola crisis was preceded by a number of developments. Coca Cola began with a mixture of water and syrup or sugar that was added as a bottled product. This beverage was used specifically as a snack type of beverage aimed at children and youth. After 1892, the beverage grew from a product and into a business, which was incorporated by Asa Candler. The company quickly grew into a regional then national business in the US. By the 1920s, the beverage had expanded into various regions of the world and began to emerge as one of the most popular brands and drinks. By the 1940s, Coca Cola was offered as a beverage in conjunction with the company’s sponsorship of events such as the Olympics, which added to its continuous growth and success. The market and brand of Coca Cola, until the mid – 1980s, was incorporated into a signature drink for political and social movements. Human Factors in System Design

Human Factors in System Design This assignment highlights the human factors that are important to be considered in system design of a website. A justification, why the client would pay the mentioned amount is highlighted in this assignment. An evaluation of the usability specification of the chosen website www.best-electronics-ca.com has been discussed in details. Moreover, a critical evaluation of the site is also evaluated. The physical as well as the psychological factors are also addressed. Justification of the cost incurred The cost incurred for the evaluation of the website is  £650 per day. In order to evaluate the website, the easy of navigation needs to be evaluated. Moreover, the attractiveness of the design needs to be considered. The ease of use as well as the efficiency of the interface is also to be measured. The attractiveness of the interface has to be evaluated as well. Thus the cost estimated is justified (Ashraf and Thongpapanl 2015). Moreover, the usability goals of the website have to be measured along with the planning of the website. Thus, the usability specification needs to be evaluated using high or low fidelity prototyping techniques such as storyboard. The interface design principles are to be evaluated. Hence the incurred cost is well justified. Moreover, the website needs to be reconsidered and the design and ease of use needs to be revised. Hence, this project is an essential one (Bilgihan and Bujisic 2015). The maintenance cost and the labor costs are also considered. This w ould increase the productivity of the company and in the long run would reduce the maintenance cost and save time, with the ease of use. Critical analysis and evaluation of the website The given website is evaluated against the various aspects of an ideal website. These are as follows: Navigation: The navigation of a website is an important factor. In the chosen website, the navigation is very poor (Ashraf and Thongpapanl 2015). The contents of the website overcrowd the navigation buttons and the user would find it difficult to navigate easily from one functionality to the other. Attractiveness of the design: The design of the website is very poor and low graded. The website is not visually soothing to the user, as there are not images or pictorial representations. The design is not at all attractive, since the users do not find it easy to use the website (Bilgihan and Bujisic 2015). Ease of use: The ease of use of the website is not good, since the users would get confused with the contents and the navigations. Moreover, the navigation buttons are lost inside the contents of the website. Thus, the ease of use is very poor. Efficiency of the interface: The interface is not at all easy to use. There is no specific panel for the navigation buttons. Moreover, no pictorial representation and no user assistance button is available. Clarity of the interface: The interface is not clear. The text is not formatted well, and hence is not visually appealing. Moreover the interface lacks clarity. Users would take a lot of time to locate the navigation buttons, among the contents of the website. Content: The content is relevant and useful. However, the font size and style are not consistent. Call to action: Call to action refers to the words or set of words that helps the visitors to take immediate actions. This feature is unavailable in the evaluated website. The users do not have any scope to opt for the call to action (Ashraf and Thongpapanl 2015). Usability goals These include the expectations of a user while using a website. The specifications of the usability goals are as follows: Accessibility: This refers to the evaluation of a website on the basis of how well the navigation options are separated from the content of the website. Moreover, the structural setting of the website also determines the accessibility of the website (Hood et al. 2015). This website is not easily assessable, since the navigation options are not separated from the contents of the website. Security: The security of the website is an essential feature. The security of the website is not strong since it could be easily hacked. Now level: With the wide use of mobile phones, the websites require to be easily accessible using mobile phones. Since, the website itself is very clumsy in the desktop version; hence, using its mobile site would be clumber some for the users (Johnson 2013). The planned and minimum levels of acceptance: The minimum level of acceptance is quiet low for the evaluated website. Other conditions to be taken into account: The users need to be well versed in the computer since the website is not easy to use and the users need to be an expert in order to use the website. Evaluation of the website Specifications Expected Outcome Actual Outcome Navigation Easily navigable Not easily navigable Design Appealing to the user Notappealing to the user User interface Good and efficient Poor and inefficient Distinct Yes No Consistent Yes No Interactive Highly interactive to the users responses Not at all interactive Structured Well structured Not well structured Clickable Easily redirected to the desirable pages, on click Not easily redirected to the desired pages, on click Visual effects Attractive visual effects No visual effects at all Key human factors essential for website design While designing a website, there are various human factors that needs to be considered are as follows: 1. Recognition not recall: The human brain is made to recognize various icons and features of a website and not recall. Hence, the website needs to be designed in a way that the human brain recognizes (Hood et al. 2015). The icons used in the website needs to be familiar, hence easily recognized. In the chosen website, the icons used are not easily recognized. 2. 7 seconds: It has been researched that a human brain needs seven seconds to see and make choices. Hence, the website should not provide a huge number of choices. This is fulfilled by the website, as there is hardly any choice available for the user. 3. Brain like patterns: There are certain kinds of patterns that helps the brain to work faster and response faster. Hence the website needs to be designed considering that (Hood et al. 2015). However, the chosen website is very clumsy and the user finds it difficult to recognize and respond (Bilgihan and Bujisic 2015). 4. Sounds or audio recognition: This is essential element of a website. Inclusion of sounds in a website might assist the user that he was unable to understand by simply reading the instructions (Lopatovska 2015). 5. Visual effects: Human brain tends to retain facts they see, for a longer time, than things they read. Hence, the navigation of the website and the users assistance could be provided using visual effects (Singh et al. 2016). These are some of the physical and psychological factors of human beings that need to be considered while designing a website. However, none of the above mentioned features have been included in the considered website. A storyboard is a graphic organizer that includes illustrations and images in a website. This is used for the purpose of pre-visualizing and motion pictures. This could be used efficiently by the website in order to incorporate visual effects in the website. It is recommended that the website needs to be redesigned following the guidelines of an ideal website. The navigation buttons needs to be placed in such a way that they are easily traceable and identified by the user (Ashraf and Thongpapanl 2015). Moreover, the font of the content needs to be structured and formatted, in order to enhance the quality of the website. It is also recommended that the website includes visual assistance and attractive user interface. The contents need to be arranged in a systematic way such that the users find it easy to read the contents (Ashraf and Thongpapanl 2015). The clarity of facts and consistent of the contents have to be incorporated as well. The overall presentation of the website needs to be improved, along with enhancement of the technical consistency of the website. The ease of use of the website has to be considered as well. The key human factors those are essential for a good website has to be incorporated. Finally, the security issues nee ds to be incorporated such that the details of the users are kept confidential. Thus, to conclude it might be stated that, the chosen website needs a lot of improvements such that it is easily used by the users. The ease of use of the website would improve the cost per click as well. The addition of motion pictures using the storyboard is also recommended. This would definitely enhance the quality of the website and become appealing to the users. References Ashraf, A. and Thongpapanl, N.T., 2015. Is More Information Content Always Good? Adaptation of W.S. Maugham’s novel The painted veil Essay

Shortly after meeting earnest, socially awkward bacteriologist Walter Fane at a party, vivacious, vain, and vacuous London socialite Kitty Garstin enters into a loveless marriage with him at the urging of her domineering mother. Following a honeymoon in Venice, the couple go to Shanghai, where the doctor is stationed in a government lab studying infectious diseases. Kitty meets Charles Townsend, a married British vice consul, and the two engage in a clandestine affair. When Walter discovers his wife’s infidelity, he seeks to punish her by threatening to divorce her on the grounds of adultery if she doesn’t accompany him to a small village in a remote area of China, where he has volunteered to treat victims of an unchecked cholera epidemic sweeping through the area. Kitty begs to be allowed to divorce him quietly and he agrees, provided Townsend will leave his wife Dorothy and marry her. When she proposes this possibility to her lover, he declines to accept, and she is c ompelled to travel to the mountainous inland region with her husband. They embark upon an arduous, two-week-long overland journey that would be considerably faster and much easier if they traveled by river, Upon their arrival in Mei-tan-fu, she is distressed to discover they will be living in near squalor, far removed from everyone except their cheerful neighbor Waddington, a British deputy commissioner living with a young Chinese woman in relative opulence. See more:  The 3 Types of Satire Essay Walter and Kitty barely speak to each other and, except for a cook and a Chinese soldier assigned to guard her, she is alone for long hours. After visiting an orphanage run by a group of French nuns, Kitty volunteers her services, and she is assigned to work in the music room. She is surprised to learn from the Mother Superior that her husband loves children, and in this setting she begins to see him in a new light as she learns what a selfless and caring person he can be. When he sees her with the children, he in turn realizes she is not the shallow, selfish person he thought her to be. As Walter’s anger and Kitty’s unhappiness subside, their marriage begins to blossom. She soon learns she is pregnant, but is unsure who the father is. Walter – in love with Kitty again – assures her it doesn’t matter. Just as the local cholera problem is coming under control, ailing refugees from elsewhere pour into the area, forcing Walter to set up a camp outside town. He contracts the disease and Kitty nurses him, but he dies, devastating her. Five years later, while shopping with her young son Walter in London, Kitty meets Townsend by chance on the street. He suggests the two get together and asks young Walter his age, realising from the reply that he could be Walter’s father. Kitty, however, rejects his overtures and walks away. When her son asks who Townsend is, she replies â€Å"No one important†. Awards and honors Composer Alexandre Desplat won the 2006 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score Desplat also won an award for Best Original Score from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association for both The Painted Veil and The Queen (2006). Edward Norton was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead but lost to Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson. The San Diego Film Critics Society honored him for his work in this and The Illusionist and Down in the Valley. The London Film Critics’ Circle nominated Toby Jones Best British Supporting Actor of the Year. ***Questions for discussion: 1. Give the description of the main heroin Kitty paying attention to her inner changes during the story film. Kitty Fane is a beautiful young woman. Kitty is charming and socially adept, but vacuous. She is vivacious, vain, spoiled and selfish. She doesn’t love her husband Walter, she considers him a boring, uncheerful, too serious and unthoughtful man. With him Kitty is unhappy. But during the film we can see how the main heroin changes. She learns from the Mother Superior that her husband loves children. And she begins to see him in a new light. She learns, that other people in Mei-tan-fu consider him a selfless and caring person. He is very kind. He is devoted to his work. He takes a great care of his patients. And Kitty understands, that she didn’t notice the good qualities of his husband. Kitty learns to respect her husband. She falls in love with her husband. She is selfish no more. She is very attentive to her husband, because she understands, that she has made a mistake. She takes care of orphans and she likes it. Kitty loves her husband and is happy now. 2. Express your attitude to Walter’s reaction. (to treachery) Was it quite usual or was it a bit unexpectedly? Why did he prefer to behave in this very way? Such a reaction is unusual and unexpected. Perhaps he prefers to behave in this way, because he wants to show Kitty, that he is no fool. He wants to teach her a lesson. He wants she gets rid of her selfishness and vanity. He wants she answer for her mistakes. 3. And what can you say about Charles Townsend? Is it typical of men to behave in such a way when they feel that something threatens their life or carrier? Are men such cowards indeed? I think that it is typical of many men to behave in such a way when they feel that something threatens their life or carrier. They don’t want to be responsible for their acts. Charles Townsend likes to have a good time with a beautiful woman. But when Kitty says him, that she loves him und wants to be married, he is very frightened of this. Because it can spoil his carrier. I think there a lot of such men in our world. And there are very few men, that are responsible for their acts and behave in an proper manner. That’s why Maugham shows us a typical character. 4. How can you interpret the title of the novel film? What did Maugham want to tell us using this title? (Ð  Ã °Ã ·Ã'€Ð ¸Ã' Ã ¾Ã ²Ã °Ã ½Ã ½Ã °Ã' Ð ²Ã'Æ'Ð °Ã »Ã'Å', Ð £Ã ·Ã ¾Ã'€Ð ½Ã'‹Ð ¹ Ð ¿Ã ¾Ã ºÃ'€Ð ¾Ã ²). At a wedding, a veil is usually white, representing the innocence of the person wearing it. White is pure and has not yet been violated. In the film the veil is painted, which means that it is not an innocent veil the characters are wearing. Maugham used this concept to show how all of society and the people living in it are tainted. 5. The end of the story seems to be rather vivid & emotional. The meeting of two old acquaintances is rather cold full of contempt at least from Kitty’s direction. What are your emotions? Do you feel sorry for Charles or do you despise him as Kitty? Explain. The end of the film is very emotional, but I don’t feel sorry for Charles. I feel contempt to him as Kitty. And he has only himself to blame for this. He was frightened to marry her. He didn’t want to marry her. He was afraid to spoil his career. He left her and didn’t think of her all these years. He behaved as a coward. And he deserves such an attitude.
