ARTH 202: Survey of the History of Western Art II Professor Schmunk Field trip to the Greenville County Museum of Art N.C. Wyeth’s Anthony Adverse originally served as the endpaper for the Hervey Allen novel of the same name, originally published in 1933. The novel is described by the Encyclopedia Britannica as being â€Å"a long, rambling work set in Europe, Africa, and the Americas during the Napoleonic era.† Throughout the story, Anthony has many adventures, including slave trading in Africa, working as a businessman and plantation owner in New Orleans, and being imprisoned and subsequently dying in Mexico. The endpaper by N.C. Wyeth depicts the slave trade portion of Anthony Adverse. There is much contrast in the facial expressions of the two characters. While Anthony looks at the slaves with disdain and unconcern, the friar seems to feel apathy for these people who are being driven out of their homes. The comp osition of the piece, unsurprisingly, places the most important figures closest to the viewer. Anthony is the clear focal point, as he is made larger than all other figures, leaving little doubt about his importance in the ensuing novel. The colors, as previously mentioned, are generally light and subdued. The poses of Anthony and the friar in the foreground are static, as they are watching the action unfold behind them. In contrast, the slave masters and slaves are seen in motion. Linear perspective is evident in the orthogonal lines made by the fence of the holding pin. This is the only instance of orthogonal in the piece, so it is unclear where the exact vanishing point is located. The gradual decreasing in size of the figures also adds to the linear perspective and depth of the painting. The piece similar to A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat in its composition, as two characters are seen in the foreground with many characters in the background . The texts that have been analyzed have have contrasting literary devices, this can be ascribed to the fact that â€Å"To Kill a Mockingbird† was written as a novel with the intent to be read and â€Å"A Dolls House† a play with the intent to be watched and acted out. Thus the way in which they express the literary devices have different effects and evoke emotions differently within their respective audiences. Ibsen incorporates both inner and outer conflict in A Dolls House with a specific end goal to propel the story and keep the crowd intrigued and locked in. The only clear-cut thing I have learned in high school is that your intelligence can be quantified. Perhaps it can also be implied that this number is the only force driving us to try to understand our world. Comprehension has been completely eliminated from the equation. It seems as though I am one of the few people in high school who still appreciates the art of learning. I want to grasp some understanding as to why things happen and how different things interact and work together. I dont do that for anyone except me. I never ask what is going to be on a test because I honestly dont care. I dont believe in limiting my knowledge to accommodate a test. I dont fight with teachers for  ­gratuitous points, because there isnt a huge difference between a few points on a test. My point is not to declare that grades are completely superfluous, but instead realize that grades are composed of an aggregation of numbers teachers assign based on your performance. Instead, they have evolved into a measure of a persons worth. There are many fallacies in this. For one, each teacher instructs at a different level of difficulty and what you put in isnt always what you get out. In fact, effort exerted and your grade have some correlation, but not to the  ­extent they should. Instead obsequiousness is almost encouraged because every extra point haggled from a teacher is an additional decimal point, and that is all it comes down to, isnt it? What do you get when you coalesce all the small fractions of a point? It doesnt make you any smarter. Yet, despite the subtle nuances between one point and another, grades are calculated to the nearest hundredth of a decimal point. How can there be that significant a difference between a 101.32 and a 101.78? How can a number that by definition is not objective be broken down into such tiny fractions and then used to determine a persons intelligence? Grades do not reflect ones motivation, ambition, or aptitude. Theyre just numbers. What makes a grade so official, anyway? Is it meant to define a person? In our society, the idea of judging someone beyond numbers seems completely esoteric. Grades, salary, weight, age – what if you added up all these numbers that delineate you? Could you use that to compare your worth to anothers?  ­Obviously not, and to try would be ludicrous. There is so much angst generated over these numbers. The whole system is absurd. The ideal seems to be to start with a decent average, and continually push to increase that number exponentially. We are taught to strive for perfection in place of searching for comprehension. We are placed under immense pressure, controlled by little measurements, so small that there is always a distance to perfection. There is this constant pressing feeling of inadequacy spawned within each of us. Do you lose the ability to think and act for yourself when youre so used to just doing what others say youre supposed to do? We have been taught to take the most exacting classes as opposed to what we might find interesting. It takes away from the passion and enjoyment of learning when everything is done to please. This creates an extremely heavy weight teetering on each students shoulders. Its impossible to balance stability and perfection, because neither really exists. We are taught to worship these numbers because they tell us how good we are. A number can never truly reflect a person and one decimal point does not make one student more intelligent than another. The difference between a 100 and a 101 is often just luck. These numbers have taken actual learning out of our education. No one cares about anything except numbers, and getting into a good college. People cant bring themselves to focus on the moment and take in life. I decided to spend my time in high school learning. If a college dares to patronize me over a decimal point because of that, I have nothing to say.

The Eiffel Tower The Eiffel Tower The Eiffel tower is the trademark of Paris, France. With the tower being 984ft, it's kind of hard not to notice it. The tower has a restaurant, radio and television transmitter and more. Gustave A. Eiffel created the tower to enter it in the worlds fair. It was made with wrought iron and had medium wind resistance. Gustave started in 1889 and completed in 1910. Gustave A. Eiffel created the Eiffel Tower. Eiffel oversaw the construction with such success that in 1866 he founded his own company and soon became known for his wrought iron structures. Starting in 1872 he attracted foreign contracts, and in 1877 he created over the Douro River in Porto, Portugal, a steel arch bridge 525 ft in height. The Eiffel Tower is a landmark and an early example of wrought-iron construction on a gigantic scale. It was designed and built by the French civil engineer Gustave Alexandre Eiffel for the Paris World's Fair of 1889. The tower, without its modern broadcasting antennae, is 984 ft high. The lower section consists of four immense arched legs set on masonry piers. The legs curve inward until they unite in a single tapered tower. Platforms, each with an observation deck, are at three levels; on the first is also a restaurant. The tower, constructed of about 7000 tons of iron, has stairs and elevators. A meteorological station, a radio communications station, and a television transmission antenna, as well as a suite of rooms that were used by Eiffel are located near the top of the tower. Eiffel's work combined expert craftsmanship and graceful design. Completed in 1884, it was for a time the highest bridge in the world, winning Eiffel's factory a worldwide reputation for excellence. Eiffel cast Frederic Auguste Bartholdi's colossal statue Liberty Enlightening the World, which was dedicated in New York in 1886. Soon after, he began work on his greatest project, the building of the Eiffel Tower. It was completed in 1889 for the celebration of the centennial of the French Revolution (1789-1799). Eiffel was not a popular man when he started building the huge steel-frame tower that would overlook Paris. The structure was just too different and the critics didn't like it at all. In 1887, the leading artists of Paris signed a petition to have what they regarded as a monstrosity torn down immediately. Fortunately for Paris, their call was ignored. And though Parisians didn't like it at first, they began to grow fond of the structure they initially called a Cyclops and a skeleton. The Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889, just in time to show off for the World's Fair, being held that year in Paris. The tower was also a sign of things to come. Eiffel was taking full advantage of a new building material, structural steel. With it he took the first step in creating what would become the modern skyscraper. The imposing tower-constructed of 7,000 tons of iron in 18,000 parts held together by 2,500,000 rivets rises to a height of 984 ft and continues to dominate the Paris skyline. In the early 1890's Eiffel gave up the daily management of his business and became absorbed in the new science of aerodynamics. Emile Nouguier and Maurice Koechlin, the two chief engineers in Eiffel's company, had the idea for a very tall tower in June 1884. It was to be designed like a large pylon with four columns of lattice work girders, separated at the base and coming together at the top, and joined to each other by more metal girders at regular intervals. The company had by this time mastered perfectly the principle of building bridge supports. The tower project was a bold extension of this principle up to a height of 300 meters, equivalent to the symbolic figure of 1000 ft. On September 18 1884 Eiffel registered a patent "for a new figuration allowing the construction of metal supports and pylons capable of exceeding a height of 300 meters". Eiffel's clockwork precision had enabled him not only to meet his deadline, but to build the structure with the loss of only one life, that of a worker who fell from the first platform while apparently showing off for his girlfriend after the bell had sounded ending the working day.
